WASHINGTON (AP) — Alex Ovechkin scored his 718th career goal to pass Jaromir Jagr for third on the NHL’s career list, and the Washington Capitals beat the New Jersey Devils 4-3 in overtime Saturday night.
Ovechkin’s goal 2:42 into the game was his 24th of the season. The Capitals captain noted, “(Passing Jagr) is a huge milestone. He is a legend.”
But Capitals defenseman John Carlson didn’t even know Ovechkin moved up on the career goals list until told of his accomplishment.
“He’s just going about his business and doing his thing,” Carlson said. “It’s pretty incredible.”
Ovechkin is nine goals behind No. 2 Brett Hull and 165 from Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894.
